The new Punch-Out!! for the Wii seems to be hitting all the right notes. Literally, since the snippet of score you hear in the video below seems to be a great, brassy version of the classic fight song. Little Mac? Check. Punching King Hippo in the hernia, making him inadvertently drop trow? Check. Glass Joe? Check. The absolute best part of the video is Joe’s knockout, rife with subtle symbolism alluding to his French citizenship.
The only thing missing? Mike Tyson, obviously. Still, this is a whole hell of a lot closer to the NES classic than Super Punch Out for the SNES ever was. I was always disappointed that they changed so many of the old classic characters for the 16-bit follow up. It seemed like the designers originally intended to bring back old favorites but changed their minds at the last second, made minor sprite changes and gave the fighters new names. Might the Wii version reach even further back into the Old School and bring back the “BODYBLOW!!BODYBLOW!!” I remember hearing above the rest of the arcade din in my tender youth? Probably not, since that tended to grate on the nerves after a few minutes. Still! Enjoy…
Now, this seems like the Nintendo future I had envisioned as a kid. Not the trendy minimalism of most first party Wii games (Mii Channel, Wii Sports, etc) but huge, fun, colorful characters with just the right amount of Japanese wackiness! Not that Wii Sports wasn’t a blast, it just seemed a bit vanilla in the style department, y’know? Lemme know what you think in the comments!
Cap’n Jack here, with a Rewind Review! The Rewind Review features an old(ish) game that may have slipped under the gaming radar, and we rent, play, and review it for you!
Today, I bring you “WarTech: Senko Ronde“, released in May 2007 for Xbox 360. I tried this game upon a suggestion from one of Pernell’s friends he saw at PAX 2008. This game puts you in the role of a Rounder Mech pilot, in which you must battle your way past enemies in a story set in the distant future. Earth and the entire galaxy are your battleground, as you fight an assortment of mechs and bosses.
There’s been recent Wii news about Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart Wii lacking any proper chat features in-game, which is extremely disappointing. In this age of gaming, where next-gen is just a term for the non-stop progression of technology and gadgety add-ons for consoles, It seems unthinkable that one of the companies vying for First Place in the current console war would fall so far behind in online interaction and online community based services.
I have a lot of options here for a comment to accompany this video. But sentiments like “I think I need new pants…and a new chair” or “Was it good for you?” seem to ring hollow when juxtaposed with the majesty I’ve just witnessed. My………my God. I cannot wait. I hope they keep it as actual Hitler this time and not “Master D”…though the reference to a soldier calling you a “nerd” seems like they’re very aware of the old NES translation. If you’re not aware of the differences introduced in the US translation of the NES original, click here. It’s an old article I wrote on the subject back in, what, 2002? Geezus.
According to this Joystiq post, the Rock Band DLC has been accidentally announced for the rest of January:
Jan 23rd: Oasis Pack
I’m not even going to go into this since I hate Oasis so goddamm much. I’d rather put a drill in my ear than hear Wonderwall or Don’t Look Back In Anger ever again, let alone PLAY them.
Jan 30th: Progressive Pack (!!)
“Siva” by Smashing Pumpkins
(don’t know this one, but hey, it’s the Plumpkins!)
“Working Man” made famous by Rush
(there’s better Rush songs out there, but I do enjoy this song. Also, more Rush is never a bad thing)
“Ten Speed (of God’s Blood and Burial)” made famous by Coheed and Cambria
(my other favorite song from my favorite C&C album, aside from the one that came with Rock Band (Welcome Home). The lyrics are ridiculous because it’s about the crazy writer character literally arguing with his bicycle about whether he should kill off a major character in the big sci-fi story, but it rocks so hard I really can’t fault it. This is a dream come true and will be the culmination of all my hard practice in the car this week. ……I am, however, slightly concerned about it being a cover. I find it very hard to believe that they found a singer who sounds like Claudio. Of course, that singer will be ME, so we’ll see.) (more…)
