This was the first Jackie Chan movie that I ever saw. I remember I was a little kid, about 8 or 9 years old, and I used to watch the old Kung Fu movies on channel 48 or whatever. The thing I remember most about seeing this amazing acrobat for the first time was the bicycle scene that he did in Project A. Watching it again now that I'm older, I can appreciate that Samo Hung is in this movie, and the comedy between his character and Jackie's. But the movie isn't as good as I remember it was when I was a little tyke. Regardless, Project A is still a pretty good flick, especially if you like the Police Story series of movies.

Jackie plays a sailor in the Royal Navy. Most of this movie is about the conflict between the Royal Navy and the Police, and how the Police think the Navy is just spoiled, while the Navy thinks that the Police are just a bunch of stuffed shirts. Members of each (usually opposing) force are always getting into bar fights, which happens within the first 10 minutes of the movie, where Jackie, the other sailors, and a bunch of policemen get into a huge brawl, and everyone gets completely wrecked. It's probably one of the more crazier scenes I remember being in a Jackie Chan flick. Later, there is conflict over some problem that the Navy has had trying to track down some local pirates, and a shortage of funds in providing the Navy with necessary supplies and ammunition. About halfway through, the government decides to disband the Naval force, and makes all the sailors serve in the Police force. But Jackie isn't convinced just yet. He is determined to unleash his former commander's plan to get rid of those pirates once and for all; PROJECT A!!!

Well, Project A really doesn't have much to do with what happens in the rest of the movie. Basically, Jackie learns that there's a conspiracy afoot, and a traitor in the Police force. He meets up with an old thief-buddy, played by Samo Hung, who is interested in stealing a shipment going out from the traitor in the Police force, who is secretly running guns to the pirates. Afterwards, one of the British major generals is kidnapped, and Jackie gets his posse together. They decide to infiltrate the pirate hideout. Jackie poses as the pompous traitor (monocle, cane and all), find the hostages, and plans to get them out. In the end, there's a huge fight between some of the sailors and the pirates, and of course we know who's going to win in the end. However, LOTS of people get killed, blown up, beaten, and tossed around before the movie is over. At the end, Project whatever is successful, and the Navy is reinstated.

While the Kung Fu isn't all that impressive in this movie, there is some suspense in all the crap that Jackie has to go through to find out who the traitor is, where the pirates are, and trying to reinstate his former commander AND the Royal Navy. Quite a big mission to take on, if you ask me. But there's some cool acrobatics, a few good fight scenes, and some comedy between Samo and Jackie that is typical of their usual style. Definitely one to rent (I bought the tape pre-viewed at Blockbuster for $6 and don't regret it).
