Yet another early Jackie Chan winner, this film for the most part is a comedy. Jackie plays a young man who is unemployed, but dreams of fame and fortune. In the beginning of the story, Jackie tries to get a job as a bodyguard, but finds out that the position has been filled. Disappointed, Jackie decides to taunt the bodyguard, who chases him around and beats him up. But, one to be beaten, Jackie outwits the bully by luring him into a chicken house, where he throws eggs, chickens, hay, and rocks at the bodyguard until he's knocked out with a very large rock. Jackie finds another bodyguard job, which he lands with no problem. However, his new employer has a strange guest, and upon further inspection Jackie learns that this guest is a witch!

Jackie runs away. His former employer and the witch houseguest are concerned that Jackie may have seen something that he shouldn't have, and send out after him. Jackie wanders a bit more until he comes across Liu Lu Long, the Whip Hero. Liu is attempting to apprehend a vicious murderer, when he is distracted by Jackie and then stabbed by the bad guy. They both die, and Jackie sees a chance to earn some quick cash and poses as the Whip Hero, then gladly accepts the reward. This causes problems for Jackie, as he find that fame can be a dangerous thing. Since he doesn't know any Kung Fu, anyone can kick his ass. And when the witch shows up, that is exactly what happens. Fortunately for Jackie, a beggar man sees the witch and saves Jackie from certain death. He begs the old beggar (yeah, that's funny) to teach him Kung Fu. But, the master knows that Jackie is a fake, and he refuses. Finally, after a lot of whining, the beggar agrees to teach Jackie, but only if he will do an errand for him. This is where things start to get interesting.

The old beggar man sends his disciple, a smelly farting beggar, to teach Jackie a little bit of Kung Fu. The moves he teaches Jackie are not only silly looking, but they prove to be useless by themselves, and Jackie gets his ass kicked even more when he tries to use techniques such as "The Concubine", "Steel Finger" and "Bow to the King". Later, Jackie improves his Kung Fu when he is awarded the beggar man's Kung Fu manual as a reward for completing his mission. It gets more complicated, but this is the basic story, and it's really too silly to explain to the reader about the Evergreen Jade and how the courier service is trying to lure out some thieves and...whatever. There's a big battle at the end where the farting beggar returns, and he and Jackie and the beggar man help the mercenaries (or couriers, whatever) fight the bad guys. There's some pretty good Kung Fu in this scene, and of course Jackie has to beat the main baddie at the end, which is a way badass fight scene.

Half a Loaf is a lighthearted Kung Fu flick for the whole family, especially if you like fart jokes. But besides that, there's a lot of other visual humor and cool Kung Fu fights that make this one a keeper.
