Bacon Salt is a Bacon-Flavored Seasoning
So, I saw an advertisement for Bacon Salt, a new seasoning whose motto is “Because everything should taste like bacon”. It is zero calorie, vegetarian, kosher certified salt which adds a bacon flavor to whatever you sprinkle it on. I decided to buy the 3-pack sampler for $12.99 from the Bacon Salt website, to try it out. My impressions after the break.
Taste Test # 1
I decided to try this with breakfast, and what goes better with bacon than eggs! So, the first taste test is with an egg and cheese breakfast burrito. The sampler 3-pack comes with 3 types of Bacon Salt: Original, Hickory, and Peppered. I decided to try the Original flavor with the eggs.
First, the salt definitely looks like a season-salt. There’s different spices and it has a very bacon-ey aroma. It is salty, smokey, and tastes like real bacon.
Now it was time to try it on the eggs. I had mixed feelings about the flavor with the eggs. The salt has a bacon after-taste, which I didn’t like too much with the eggs. It was almost too bacon-ey, which is hard to believe, but it was overpowering. I really missed the bacon texture, since the scrambled eggs were so soft. It was just not a good mix with the eggs.
Taste Test # 2
My taste test with the eggs was yesterday, so today I decided to try this with a cheeseburger; a turkey burger to be exact. The results were MUCH better.
The meatiness of the cheeseburger mixed with the flavor of the Bacon Salt much better than the eggs did. The smokey bacon flavor gave that bacon-burger taste, with a similar texture.
So, my conclusion is that Bacon Salt is a great seasoning for meaty foods, but not necessarily for soft foods. It tastes like bacon! And, it has none of the fat and less sodium than real bacon. I’m looking forward to experimenting with other foods, and mixing Bacon Salt into recipes to add bacon flavor.
If you love bacon, I recommend that you at least try the original and see if
