Mount & Blade
Zeus over at Bucket Bros. made a recent post about an RPG called “Mount & Blade“, developed by a Turkish husband-and-wife development team. Reasons on why this is good for you after the break.
The game is only $39, and promises a lifetime license for all future upgrades. The biggest new is that it’s available for a limited time for only $25.
But is it any good? Well, the fact that you can mount and blade is a pretty positive endorsement. Check out Zeus’ article for more info, as well as his 5 reasons for buying the game.
The reason why this is important though: This is a concept that other games - especially digitally distributed games (Xbox Live, PSN, WiiWare, etc.) - can benefit from. The pay up front + free upgrades for life works with most of the software that we use on our computers today. So why not use this with video games?
For example, the Penny Arcade Adventure: RSPOD, which is currently on Xbox Live for $20, could possibly benefit from having a $50 price tag if it meant we’d get continuous, free updates to the game over the next few years. It’s a gamble, because consumers can’t really be certain how often they’re going to get these free updates. But, if a precedent is set, then the market will be there.
I’d like to see this break into the online gaming market on consoles. Actually, you can currently buy games for $50-60 that will have free downloadable content. Admittedly, most of them are first-person shooters. But just think, what if Fable came out, and for 30 months you could download a new quest with new characters and environments every month! I’d call that progress, howabout you?
