Advance Wars: Days of Ruin Review Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Adv Wars Ruin - Box Art

Our good friend and resident DS expert MasterP has written an awesome review on the new turn-based strategy game Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. I’m posting it on his behalf for now…mainly to experiment and see how reviews should be posted here before setting the general format guidelines us authors should try to follow. Anyway, hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

“Days of Ruin” places a dark veil on the Advance Wars series that we’ve come to know and love. While I am typically a huge fan of games that take a light hearted approach, I have to be honest in the fact that after playing this game, I wholeheartedly welcome the majority of the changes that Intelligent Systems has made. The removal of the “Blue Sky” atmosphere, along with a wonderful narrative, has worked wonders for the game in comparison to its predecessors.

Real Life Stuff Monday, January 28th, 2008

12015802351941.gifSo, Scientology is bad, m’kay? Sounds like Anonymous has had enough of it, and there’s a real-life raid planned…pretty much in every part of the world. We’re talking legal, nonviolent protests, which is always pretty cool. I’ve seen flyers from as far as Germany. Philly is on the list as well. Anyone want to join me on 2/10? Seems like a worthwhile cause…

Cloverfield Monday, January 28th, 2008

Cloverfield PosterOur once Japan-based, now San Diego-inhabiting friend Tyger wrote a nice little review on the recent J.J. Abrams smash-fest Cloverfield. It may have some minor spoilers for those of you who may not have seen the movie yet…since you’re not really supposed to know much of anything about the movie before you see it. Still, It’s been out for a few weeks now, so too bad. That’s why you see it on the opening weekend.

Anyway, I’ll post this one, but from now on his ass can post his own reviews…now that I changed his account privileges. Until then, read on to see if he thought it was a non-stop thrill ride, or fluff-filled motion-sickener…

Charles Barkley RPG Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

barkley2.jpg

Found this on Joystiq

You play as Charles Barkley in the year 2053 in the post-cyberpocalypse where Ballers have been all but eradicated because of their ability to perform the Chaos Dunk…one of which leveled Manhattan killing 15 million. Sounds incredible.

Check it.

Edit 1/28/08 - Just finished it today. This is an incredible game created by geniuses. Expect a review soon…after I play through it again.

Desktop Tower Defense Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Desktop Tower Defense

I’ve been hooked on this game for awhile. Desktop Tower Defense showed up on a lot of “best of” lists for 2007. It’s surprisingly addictive, yet simple. Try it out!

“Bionic Commando ReArmed” Footage Thursday, January 17th, 2008

I have a lot of options here for a comment to accompany this video. But sentiments like “I think I need new pants…and a new chair” or “Was it good for you?” seem to ring hollow when juxtaposed with the majesty I’ve just witnessed. My………my God. I cannot wait. I hope they keep it as actual Hitler this time and not “Master D”…though the reference to a soldier calling you a “nerd” seems like they’re very aware of the old NES translation. If you’re not aware of the differences introduced in the US translation of the NES original, click here. It’s an old article I wrote on the subject back in, what, 2002? Geezus.

Upcoming Rock Band DLC Leaked Thursday, January 17th, 2008

rockband_oasis_xbox-490px.jpg

According to this Joystiq post, the Rock Band DLC has been accidentally announced for the rest of January:

Jan 23rd: Oasis Pack
I’m not even going to go into this since I hate Oasis so goddamm much. I’d rather put a drill in my ear than hear Wonderwall or Don’t Look Back In Anger ever again, let alone PLAY them.

Jan 30th: Progressive Pack (!!)
Siva” by Smashing Pumpkins
(don’t know this one, but hey, it’s the Plumpkins!)

Working Man” made famous by Rush
(there’s better Rush songs out there, but I do enjoy this song. Also, more Rush is never a bad thing)

Ten Speed (of God’s Blood and Burial)” made famous by Coheed and Cambria
(my other favorite song from my favorite C&C album, aside from the one that came with Rock Band (Welcome Home). The lyrics are ridiculous because it’s about the crazy writer character literally arguing with his bicycle about whether he should kill off a major character in the big sci-fi story, but it rocks so hard I really can’t fault it. This is a dream come true and will be the culmination of all my hard practice in the car this week. ……I am, however, slightly concerned about it being a cover. I find it very hard to believe that they found a singer who sounds like Claudio. Of course, that singer will be ME, so we’ll see.)
