Tim, who some may know here as Karrde, recently traveled to NYC to film a Nintendo commercial. And now here it is!!!
For the three people who may check this site and don’t know us personally (and aren’t Russian spammers), Tim has done the voices for most of our little skits. He was Dude Sausage in “No Buns” and Chewbacca in “Self Taught”. This commercial is also viewable on the Nintendo Channel on your Wii. The video is entitled “My Slice of Rhythm Heaven #2″.
For those who may be interested, the prequel and second chapter to the Letters From a Distant Star series is out today. Included in the first story are maps and a military handbook that I use to build my notes. I created it along the way adding to it as the story goes on, so if you ever wanted to see how much work goes into a world like this here’s your opportunity. I hope everyone will take the chance to take a look at the series and post your comments either on scribd.com or on my website and help the series get out to more people!
Okay a little much on the title…maybe…maybe. Whatever. Hey its your boy Tyger and I’m out in the dusk and sands of Iraq so you know what that means? Me neither. So instead of doing something constuctive with your tax dollars, I’ve been writing and I’ve finished a short story tonight that I hope a few of you will enjoy. It actually started off as a spoof that I was going to throw in a few of my WSO buddies in all Spaceballs style but then I made the mistake of taking it seriously. Anyhow, for your reading pleasure (all two of you that read my post) here’s Letters From a Distant Star. If you like it check out my other short stories and up coming projects on my website.
I’m not really a big comic book guy. I enjoy them sometimes, but I’m not fully versed in the exploits of the various incarnations of the Green Lantern or what have you. I hadn’t been to a geeky convention since college and I always enjoyed seeing the cool costumes. Normally, however, I probably would’ve opted to save my money and stay home. The main reason I went was to meet the guys from Penny Arcade.
I’ll explain them with an SAT-style analogy: Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins (aka Gabe & Tycho) are to the video game industry and culture as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are to news and politics. They provide a satirical filter through which you can easily obtain the basic facts about current events in an interesting and entertaining manner. When I read that they were going to have a booth at the Comic Con where you could buy a t-shirt or a book and meet Gabe & Tycho in person, I made up my mind. I’ve been a fan of their site and accompanying web comic for years and I wanted to jump on the chance to meet them during one of their rare trips to the east coast.
Those who know me know that I rank Valve’s Half Life series right up at the top of my “favorite video games” list. I think it’s the storytelling. By never ever taking you out of the first person view and allowing you freedom of movement, even when large plot points are taking place, you’re not being told a story…you’re living the story. I think the idea of a Half Life movie has been tossed around before, and it might be neat if handled correctly, but that might be tough to really pull off.
After seeing this video, I believe that Purchase Brothers may just have that ability. Escape From City 17 - Part One manages to completely capture the feeling of the game. The actors could be a lot better, yes, but the effects are top notch and they really got a hold of that panicky, “oh man we’re in deep trouble” feeling you get when hiding from Striders or being chased by Combine Overwatch soldiers in Half Life 2. And Valve (being Valve) have not insisted that the video be removed from YouTube for unliscenced use of their sound effects, etc., but have promoted this unsolicited fan film through a news update on their game distribution platform, Steam. Man, I love that company. Anyway, check it out and let them know if you like it!
I saw this on EvilAvatar tonight and had to share. Alexandria (of Beavotron.com) posted these precious Valentines on the Penny Arcade forums. Click that last link and enjoy!
We are now living in a world without Patrick McGoohan. His groundbreaking 1960’s series The Prisoner not only inspired current classics, such as Lost, but was pretty freakin’ awesome in its own right. I’d go on about it, but it looks like io9 did a pretty good job of it already. His absence will be felt (and has been felt since his final performance on that Simpsons eipsode as The Prisoner’s Number 6…no, Treasure Planet doesn’t count) but he leaves a legendary piece of work behind. Be seeing you, Patrick.
Well, it’s about time I let you guys know about a little thing I like to call “Ninjatown”. It’s a town full of ninjas. It’s awesome, and that’s pretty much all you need to know.
But, if you want to know more, then by all means keep reading.
